The velvet fabrics in new work, Red Composition #1, tended to billow out from the piece. To solve this, the velvet was tacked down with little hand-stitched X's as shown in this close-up pic of a portion of the piece. With the first stitches that I had to remove and re-do, I learned that velvet is unforgiving in that the needle marks remain. Thus I tried to keep the too-even stitches to a minimum. The gold silk in the center of this pic has not yet been quilted. This piece is challenging my creativity in that the fabric designs are somewhat non-descript. They were fragments that members of my small group, Cloth and Chocolate, ordered from Judy Topkis, who has beautiful, different, and interesting hand printed fabrics for sale. When I'm further long on the piece, I will share a photo of the full piece.
