A small group I'm in, Cloth & Chocolate, spent a Sunday with Visual Exercise #1, Splitting Shapes, from the book Finding Your Own Visual Language by Claire Benn, Jane Dunnewold, and Leslie Morgan. Of the paper studies I did, I decided to work one of the simpler ones into fabric. This paper study split and separated the shapes, but then I flipped the shapes vertically to get the asymmertrial lines. On the right is a blown-up copy of the paper version (thanks to John and his amazing Photoshop abilities).
On the left is the b&w fabric version which has incorrect dimensions in the spaces between the lines, but with this process I learned what not to do.
The one in the middle is the fabric version using the colors I chose. I don't like the muddy-looking fabric in the center space, so will pick it out and replace with a clearer piece. It's been interesting and fun to work from a paper design. I actually (sorry Nancy!) used pattern tracing paper to get the lines exactly as I wanted them. Doing the lines free-hand just was not resulting in the same lyrical lines (to quote Nancy Crow). I love the colors and lines of this piece and am looking forward to the quilting phase when I get that center space in order.
