A Quick Project, Sumac #1

A quick project, Sumac #1 was created as a mini group challenge to make a small piece, under 12" x 12", with the theme being Autumn. Every Fall as I drive the local roads, my eye is drawn to the Sumac leaves, particulary when backlit by the sun. I see the leaves as red flags hanging from a strand. I just love the vibrant orange/red color of the plants. With so many beautiful leaves at this time of year to compete with this one--dogwood, maple and ginkgo being some of my favorites--I find that the Sumac entices me to art (or whatever it is that I do the create these fiber pieces). For this piece, I wanted it to be no-fuss and quick. I reviewed the photos I had taken of Sumac last weekend, drew a couple of renditions in my pathetic sketchbook, perched the sketchbook on the drafting table, cut a background, marked the stem line with white chalk, and started cutting the pieces with the rotary cutter. I worked with the Sumac leaves a bit, but got it to the place I felt represented what I often see on my daily travels. With raw edged batik, I sewed those leaves down and then lightly quilted it and faced it. I'm done. Done. And it feels good to have done such a simple yet satisfying piece.

I love the sumac too. I used to pass a group of them on the way to work every day and just loved it when they turned color in the fall. I think you have captured it well.
