Yes, I'm desperate for something to post today. I renewed my subscription to Workshopontheweb which gave me access to the September 2008 publication. I found that the article "Machine Embroidery Part 2 with Ken Smith" appealed to me enough to print the article, get to my sewing machine, prop the article within view, and start practicing. This "mossing stitch" as he calls it, is something that I envision using in a project that has been brewing in my mind--now on paper but no more than that. I started with white fabric, white thread in the needle, and pink in the bobbin, with the top tension low such that the stitching looks pretty much white, then gradually tightened the top tension until the stitching appears to be pink. Then I used gray in the bobbin with white in the needle. Then turned over and stitched from the back with thicker dark gold in the bobbin. Finally, turned back to the right side with black in the needle with pink in the bobbin, switching to purple when the pink was exhausted. One thing I can say is that this mossing uses a lot of thread, something to consider. The photo is evidence that I need a lot more practice with this, but I can see the usefulness of this stitching. I like that by varying the density and the tension different results may be attained. I recommend subscribing to Workshopontheweb, even with the US/Great Britain exchange rate as it is. If you go to the link, be sure to take the Taster link. Do you get my enthusiasm for this publication?

Hi, Twila,
I think your sample looks pretty cool and it opens up some neat texturing in your quilting.

Looks like it would be very hard to do, however, I like it, and see how you potentially could use it in your projects. Rachie
